Ax les Thermes
On the borders of the Central and Eastern Pyrenees, Ax-les-Thermes is nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains.
Although best known for its skiing in winter, it is well worth a visit in the summer. To make the most of your day out, take the scenic route which winds its way through some beautiful countryside and spectacular views. From Montcabirol head out on the D625 towards Levelanet and rather than take the N20 head cross country until you pick up the D613 and follow the road into Ax-les-Thermes.
It has been a spa town since the 12th century and the waters are rich in sodium and sulphur and are the hottest in the Pyrenees. If you are interested in experiencing the spa water, you can just paddle in the pool in the square, or visit Les Bains du Coiuloubret.
Summer activities in the area include a vast number of walking and cycling trails.
There are plenty good places you can stop for coffee, a drink or lunch. If you love cheese then visit La Petite Fringale where they have a selection of fondues and other specialities.
